It has come to be expected that somebody will wear a Halloween costume that comes across as offensive or insensitive. This year two of those people were Kylie Jenner and Nicky Hilton.
On Halloween, Jenner shared a video of herself in costume with the caption, “Eskimo." She wore the costume to a party on Oct. 30, The Huffington Post reports.
The problem with this is that “Eskimo” is generally considered to be a slur, according to the University of Alaska Fairbanks. Inuit and Yupik people can find the term “Eskimo” to be offensive because it was originally said to mean “eater of raw meat.”
Later on, Jenner uploaded another photo of herself in her costume, and she changed the caption to “Snow Princess,” possibly in an attempt to avoid offending anybody again.
Nicky Hilton also managed to offend people when she was showed up to the Casamigos Tequila Halloween Party on Oct. 30, dressed up as a Native American, or an “Indian," The Huffington Post notes.
Her sister, Paris Hilton, similarly landed herself in some hot water in 2010 when she showed up to a Halloween party dressed as a “sexy Indian.”
