Celebrity couple Kanye West and Kim Kardashian West revealed the name of their newborn daughter on the reality star's app and website. The already famous child's name is Chicago West.
Chicago, delivered via surrogate, was born early on Jan. 15, People magazine reports. She appears to be a healthy baby, weighing 7 pounds, 6 ounces.
"We are incredibly grateful to our surrogate who made our dreams come true with the greatest gift one could give and to our wonderful doctors and nurses for their special care," Kardashian West wrote on her website after the birth of their daughter.
The style mogul added that her and West's two other children, 4-year-old North and 2-year-old Saint, were "thrilled" with the new addition to their family.
Though the couple did not state their reasoning for choosing the baby's name, Chicago is also the city where her rapper father grew up.
Sources told TMZ that Kardashian West was in the room during the baby's delivery and was the first person to have "skin-to-skin" contact with her.
The couple's first two children were delivered by Kardashian West. According to E! News, doctors advised them to use a surrogate for their third child due to the mother's troubles with preeclampsia and placenta accreta during her past two pregnancies.
Kardashian West defended her decision to not carry Chicago herself, but admitted that the choice came with its own difficulties.
"Having a gestational carrier is definitely different, but anyone who says or thinks it's the easy way out is completely wrong," she said on her app. "People assume it's better because you don't have to deal with the physical changes, pain or complications with delivery, but for me it was so hard to not carry my own child, especially after I carried North and Saint."
While the baby's surrogate has not been named, the couple has said they have a great relationship with her.
"The connection with our baby came instantly and it's as if she was with us the whole time," the couple said after her birth. "Having a gestational carrier was so special for us and she made our dreams of expanding our family come true."
TMZ published details about the surrogate in September 2017, stating that she was a college-educated African-American woman in her 20s who has been married for five years and already has two children of her own.
The baby, who is sure to be in the spotlight soon, apparently already has a nickname -- North and Saint have reportedly been calling her "Chi" (pronounced like "shy"). Several fans have followed suit.
