Dorain Johnson, the 22-year-old man who was considered one of the key witnesses in the Michael Brown shooting in Ferguson, is reported to have been charged with filing a false police report in 2011.
In fact, an arrest warrant, also from 2011, was still out for Johnson at the time that Officer Darren Wilson shot Brown.
The arrest warrant was issued in Jefferson City.
In the immediate aftermath of the Ferguson shooting, Johnson talked to the media about the version of events he claims unfolded as he and Brown were walking in the street. Johnson told reporters that his friend was “shot like an animal” and was running away with his hands up.
“The second time he says, ‘I’ll shoot,’ a second later the gun went off and he let go,” Johnson told USA Today. “That’s how we were able to run at the same time. The officer pursued Brown and fired another shot, which struck Brown in the back.”
His account of the incident helped spur the focus on Brown allegedly having his hands up as he ran from the police; the account also had a role in spurring the nationwide protests that erupted after Brown’s death.
Two other Ferguson shooting witnesses – Tiffany Mitchell and Piaget Crenshaw – also later stated that Brown was running away with his hands up.
However, the preliminary autopsy results indicated that the teenager had not been shot in the back, as described in the three witnesses’ accounts; instead, all of the bullets had hit Michael Brown in the front. It currently remains unproven whether Brown had raised his hands in a surrender position, or in another position.
ABC 17 News uncovered Johnson's police record, which, as Inquisitr reports, “initiated the casting of doubt upon Ferguson shooting statements.”
Current media reports indicate that Johnson will not be charged for the alleged cigarellos theft at the Ferguson QuikTrip that he and Brown had been involved in directly before the shooting.
When journalist Don Lemon asked Johnson’s attorney if Johnson’s neglecting to note that he and Brown had just robbed the store was a “lie of omission”, the lawyer replied that it was not.
Inquisitr reports that whether or not Johnson has been arrested on the outstanding warrant remains unknown.
