Actor Kevin Spacey has come out as gay after actor Anthony Rapp accused him of sexual harassment.
The alleged incident took place in 1986, BuzzFeed News reported. Rapp, who was 14 at the time, said he was attending a party at Spacey's apartment. They were both Broadway actors at the time.
Rapp said he was the only non-adult at the party. He added that he "didn't know anyone," and "was quickly kind of bored." He went into a bedroom and watched television well past midnight. That's when Spacey walked in.
“My memory was that I thought, Oh, everybody's gone. Well, yeah, I should probably go home,” Rapp told BuzzFeed News. Rapp said Spacey, who was 26 at the time, then "sort of stood in the doorway, kind of swaying."
"My impression when he came in the room was that he was drunk,” Rapp recalled. “He picked me up like a groom picks up the bride over the threshold. But I don't, like, squirm away initially, because I'm like, 'What's going on?' And then he lays down on top of me.”
“He was trying to seduce me,” Rapp continued. “I don't know if I would have used that language. But I was aware that he was trying to get with me sexually.”
Rapp said he was able to push Spacey off of him. He remembered stepping into a bathroom and being in shock.
"I was like, 'What is happening?'” Rapp said. “I saw on the counter next to the sink a picture of him having his arm around a man. So I think on some level I was like, Oh. He's gay. I guess. Then I opened the door, and I was like, 'OK, I'm going to go home now.' He followed me to the front door of the apartment, and as I opened the door to leave, he was leaning on the front door [frame]. And he was like, 'Are you sure you wanna go?' I said, 'Yes, good night,' and then I did leave."
Rapp said he is glad nothing else happened that night.
"And at the same time, the older I get, the more I can't believe it," Rapp said. "I could never imagine [that] anyone else I know would do something like that to a 14-year-old boy."
Rapp said he decided to share his story "not to simply air a grievance, but to try to shine another light on the decades of behavior that have been allowed to continue because many people, including myself, being silent.
"I'm feeling really awake to the moment that we're living in, and I'm hopeful that this can make a difference."
Spacey took to Twitter Oct. 29 to respond to the allegations. He said he was "beyond horrified" to hear Rapp's story, and added that he does "not remember the encounter."
“But if I did behave then as he describes, I owe him the sincerest apology for what would have been deeply inappropriate drunken behavior, and I am sorry for the feelings he describes having carried with him all these years," the statement read.
Spacey also went on to reveal that he has "had relationships with both men and women."
"I have loved and had romantic encounters with men throughout my life, and I choose now to live as a gay man," Spacey wrote. "I want to deal with this honestly and openly and that starts with examining my own behavior."
