Hip-hop artist Kanye West reportedly tried to assault a staff member at his gym before his doctor called 911 and he was taken to a Los Angeles-area hospital for psychiatric evaluation.
West's personal physician, Dr. Michael Farzam, is the person who called 911 on Nov. 21 to have the musician hospitalized, TMZ reports.
When Farzam called 911, he said the male who needed help was named Jim Jones, aged 39, with a height of 5 feet 8 inches and weight of 175 pounds, according to TMZ. He reportedly described the man as having temporary psychosis due to sleep deprivation and dehydration.
West had reportedly tried to assault a staff member at the gym prior to the 911 call, but Farzam told the dispatcher the musician was not violent but may become violent when police arrived to assist him.
The police report states that Farzam told officers he had placed West on a 5150 psychiatric hold and wanted him taken to UCLA Medical Center.
West was allegedly handcuffed to a gurney, which is standard protocol for similar situations, and transported to the hospital.
The alleged 911 call and subsequent psychiatric evaluation occurred hours after West abruptly canceled the remaining 21 dates of his Saint Pablo tour.
“He feels like he’s under spiritual attack, and has been for awhile. It’s not just the big things; it’s smaller, quieter things, internal things,” a source told People. “You might think that it’s about Kim’s robbery, and while that didn’t help, that’s not what’s going on here. He’s dealing with a lot more subtle issues.”
West’s wife, Kim Kardashian West, was allegedly held at gunpoint and robbed of jewelry worth millions of dollars in October while she was in Paris.
November is also a difficult time personally for West, according to the source, because his mother died in November 2007.
“His mother died in November, so this time of year always brings him a lot of pain. He keeps that pain internalized, but sometimes will talk about how hard this time of year is for him. He works through the pain every November,” the source said.
Another source previously confirmed to People that West is dealing with sleep deprivation and went to the hospital on the advice of his physician.
“He’s fine,” the source said.
“He feels like it’s a trying time for his spirit, but that can be a good thing. He isn’t one to run away from these things. He leans in and listens, and comes away a stronger, better man. But it hurts him; his spirit is vexed. But that’s where growth comes from,” the most recent source said.
Kardashian West was scheduled to make her first public appearance since the robbery on Nov. 21, but canceled her attendance at the Angel Ball in New York to return to Los Angeles where her husband is reportedly receiving treatment.
