One of the two girls shot and killed by their mother was on the phone with her friend hours before the incident occurred.
Christy Sheats, 42, was killed by police outside her Texas home after she gunned down her daughters, Taylor Sheats, 22, and Madison Sheats, 17, on June 24, Fox News reports.
A friend of Madison's who did not want to be named told the Daily Mail she sensed something was off when she spoke to Madison on the phone the morning of the shooting.
"I called her around 9 or 10 that morning to ask her a favor and I could tell something was wrong with her," she said. "I could just tell in her voice she was upset about something. I asked her what was going on and she wouldn’t tell me."
She continued,"She just said that she was arguing with her mom. I found that really weird because she would always tell me what was wrong with her but that day she just didn't tell me."
She said she used to spend a lot of time at the Sheats' house.
"I was over there almost every weekend and we did stuff together. I never noticed anything with the family. I mean they argued but there was nothing really big," she said. "Her mom was a good person. I just don't know what happened that day."
Also present during the shooting was Christy's husband Jason, who was uninjured. The Fort Bend County Sheriff's Office said the incident was preceded by a family meeting, during which an argument took place.
"During that meeting, Christy Sheats held up a gun and shot both girls," the sheriff's office said, reports Fox News.
Jason and the two girls ran outside, where Madison collapsed and died from her injuries. Christy followed them outside and shot Taylor in the street. She then reportedly went back inside to reload before coming out and shooting Taylor again.
Jason managed to run away and alert a neighbor, who dialed 911, according to the Daily Mail.
When officers arrived on the scene, they saw Christy shooting her daughter and told her to drop her weapon. They shot her when she refused to comply, killing her.
Taylor died after she was rushed to a Houston hospital.
A witness who requested anonymity spoke to the Daily Mail about the event.
"I looked out and I saw [Christy] standing over one of the girls with the gun pointed at her and she shot her as she lay on the ground," the witness said.
She added that Christy had had issues for a long time.
"She should never have had a gun," she said. "Jason is a nice man but there were issues with her."
Police responded to 14 calls at the Sheats' residence since January 2012, according to CBS News. Some of the calls were accidental alarm trips, while others were for emergency medical responses.
In November 2015, a third party called the police and reported a verbal dispute. Responding officers determined there was no physical violence and no charges were filed.
Christy and Jason had recently gotten back together after a separation, the Daily Mail reports.
