Ohio woman Judith Hawkey was in court this week on charges that she orchestrated her husband’s murder 10 years ago.
In Nov. 2003, Defiance County Sheriff’s deputies found Hawkey's husband, Robert Breininger, dead from a single gunshot wound to the head. The death was ruled an accident.
Now prosecutors believe Hawkey might have used her 10-year-old child to do her bidding. New evidence led authorities to bring Hawkey up on charges; however, they are unable to share the details of that evidence publicly.
"It was claimed at that time, that it was an accident shooting involving a young boy, and that's the way the matter was left," Morris Murray, Defiance County Prosecuting Attorney, told WTOL 11.
Hawkey is the only person facing charges in the case – the child is not being charged. She has six charges leveled against her, including felony-aggravated murder and four counts of endangering children, one of which is a second-degree felony. According to authorities, Hawkey also allegedly tortured and abused a child between the ages of 7 and 10 for three to four years.
She also faces charges for insurance fraud in connection with a life insurance policy on which she collected after Breininger’s death.
Authorities say the investigation is ongoing. Pretrial hearing will be held April 1. Hawkey is being held on a $3 million bond at the Corrections Center of Northwest Ohio.
