An Ohio thief was given an unusual choice of punishments for his crime: either go straight to jail or wear a humiliating sign.
Greg Davenport was convicted in a court in Girard after pleading no contest and chose to be humiliated instead of incarceration, reports WKBD. He was outside a Liberty Wal-Mart on March 23 wearing a sign that said “I am a thief. I stole from Walmart.”
The shoplifter will be holding the sign 8 hours a day for 10 days instead of spending 30 days in jail. Davenport says he was caught trying to lift a 52-inch television.
“I stole, I got punished. That’s it,” Davenport said, adding that he chose the punishment so he could take care of his parents.
There’s even someone who checks every other hour to make sure Davenport is walking the street, reports WKBN
Davenport has been convicted of other petty theft charges in Austintown, Boardman, Canfield and now Liberty, Ohio.
Liberty Police Chief Richard Tisone says he hopes the sign shames Davenport enough to prevent him from committing more thefts.
“Maybe you can get to their inner side. Maybe they’re a little embarrassed by the fact they have to hold a sign up, so it might affect some of these individuals, so I’m all for it,” he said.
