Joy Behar Defends Kathy Griffin And Bill Maher (Video)

Joy Behar defended Kathy Griffin and Bill Maher on "The Host," arguing the uproar was an "assault on comedians" (video below).

After Griffin posed holding the fake head of President Donald Trump in a photo and Maher used the N-word on his TV show, both received bipartisan backlash, reports The Washington Free Bacon.

Yet Behar thought some of those reactions may have gone overboard.

Behar defended Maher, arguing the backlash was hypocritical.

"Bill Maher is one of the good guys in this fight against Trump right now," she said. "I believe that he is anyway, and I feel like, you know, not to deflect from what he said because he already apologized, but Donald Trump and his people that ran his real estate agent, they actually practiced racism."

"They discriminated against black people in housing," she added. "To me, that is a much more egregious sin than saying any kind of word. You know. To me."

Surprisingly, Behar's co-host, Whoopi Goldberg, also believed Maher should not be vilified.

"You cannot continue to give the [N-word] the power because if you do, it means that every time you hear it, you stop and that's what you are dealing with. ... The word exists and it was put out there to make you feel like less," she said. "I’m saying, let’s detooth that, make someone work harder and figure out another word that might stop me."

At the same time, Behar also spoke up for Griffin.

Although she agreed death threats against a sitting president were "very wrong," she called the response to Griffin "overkill."

"Let's not lose perspective about comedians and words and things that comedians are saying because there seems to be this assault on comedians, and in the Kathy Griffin case, which I think you’re going to bring up, there is a lot of overkill going on right now," Behar said. "Okay. She made a mistake, she did something stupid. She said she’s sorry. Now they’re piling on her like she’s Charles Manson. Get over it!"

Yet not everybody agreed with Behar's opinions.

"My translation...Behar: screw the black people offended by those comments..Maher bashing Trump is far more important than their feelings...Get over it !!" wrote one News Busters reader.

Some conservatives found it hypocritical she would defend Maher and Griffin, but probably wouldn't defend a right-wing figure if they did something similar.

"Just another episode of Liberal hypocrisy," chimed in one person. "Donald Trump accused of sexism, etc. - 'Oh, the Horror!' Bill Clinton sexually assaults women - 'Hey, he's on our side.' Nothing new - move along, people."

"As long as they oppose Trump, they're okay by The View," added another. "I doubt there's anything egregious enough that Trump haters could do that would make a difference."
