Actor Known For 'The Commish' and Voice Work Dead At 63 (Photo)

Actor John Cygan -- known for his role on the TV series "The Commish" and for his voice work in several video games and animated films -- has passed away at the age of 63.

Cygan died on May 13 in his home in Woodland Hills, California, according to The Hollywood Reporter. His death came after a long battle with cancer.

According to his IMDb page, Cygan was born on April 27, 1954, in New York City. His first listed acting credit is an unnamed role in the 1990 TV series "Babes." Throughout the next three decades, Cygan would go on to appear in several more television roles.

Of all of Cygan's TV roles, the one he was probably best known for was that of Paulie Pentangeli in "The Commish," which aired from 1992 to 1996. Throughout the show's run, Cygan appeared in a total of 35 episodes. 

One of Cygan's costars on "The Commish" was actor Michael Chiklis, who played the lead role of Tony Scali. On the day of Cygan's death, Chiklis posted a touching tribute to the late actor on his Twitter page. 

"John Cygan, one of my closest friends in this world has passed away. Impossible to adequately describe the magnitude of his loss to my family and I. Our hearts and all of our love are pouring out to John's beautiful wife Cathy and his remarkable children, Annie and Jack," the tweet, which included a picture of Cygan and Chiklis, read.

"We started our friendship by playing best friends in The Commish...Sometimes art does imitate life," it continued. "You are loved, adored and already horribly missed Johnny. I know this...Heaven just got a lot funnier. RIP brother."

Cygan also appeared in 25 episodes of the television series "Bob" (1992-1993), in which he played the role of Harlan Stone opposite Bob Newhart. His other notable TV appearances include "The X-Files" (1994), "Frasier" (1996), "NYPD Blue" (2002), and "Modern Family" (2013).

In addition to his TV appearances, Cygan was also known for his voice work. His voice appeared in several Pixar animated features, among them "Cars" (2006), "Toy Story 3" (2010), and "Inside Out" (2015). His other animated film credits include "Treasure Planet" (2002), "Ice Age: The Meltdown" (2006), and "Despicable Me 2" (2013).

Animated films were not the only productions to feature Cygan's voice; his voice work also appeared in several video games, as well. His video game voice credits include: "Star Wars: X-Wing Alliance" (1999), "Marvel: Ultimate Alliance" (2006), and "World of Warcraft: Legion" (2016). 

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Cygan is survived by his wife, Cathy, and their children, Annie and Jack.
