A Florida mother and daughter were recently woken up early in the morning after a stranger knocked aggressively at their front door.
Natasha Carter said it was just after 6 a.m. on Dec. 2 when she heard someone banging on the door, ABC News reported. Carter told her daughter to stay put as she went to find out what the noise was about.
When Carter opened the door, she saw Meredith Mikell on her porch. Mikell had been on a morning run when she decided to take a new route in front of Carter’s house. As she was running, she saw smoke billowing from Carter’s porch and went to alert the residents.
“Your house is on fire!” Mikell yelled when Carter answered the door, according to Mad World News.
Carter quickly retrieved her daughter and the two left the house to escape the fire.
“I was just in the right place in the right time,” Mikell said.
Investigators later confirmed that the source of the fire came from a light fixture on the porch. The fire spread from there to the attic and caused a good deal of damage to the house. Currently, it is uninhabitable.
Carter and her daughter have since been set up in a hotel by the Red Cross, and will remain there until they can find secure living arrangements.
