Joe McNally Takes Instagram Pic on Top Of World's Tallest Building

Joe McNally had every one of his Instagram followers shocked after he uploaded a photo of him standing atop the world's tallest building.

He posted the photo, which features just his feet and the ground thousands of feet below, with a message:

"My old battered shoes climbed the tallest building today. What an amazing structure! Tweeting from 820 meters straight up!"

The building he is referring to is the Burj Khalifa, a structure 2,722 feet high in Dubai.

It became the world's tallest man-made structure on April 7, 2008, when it was taller than the KVLY-TV Mast in North Dakota.

The area where McNally was standing when he took the photo is the building's highest point, consisting of no more than a mechanical structure.

The highest areas a person can access are the living and working spaces at the 154th floor. The building's highest floors, 155-163, are used for communication equipment and structural elements.

In 2011, actor Tom Cruise scaled the building while he shot scenes for Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol. He trained for months to do the stunt, as he jumped off the building from two-thirds of the way up.

Though McNally did not jump off the building, he stood on top of the structure without any training.

He is known for covering stories at Time, Fortune, Newsweek and The New York Times. He has taken photos for Sports Illustrated, Life, and National Geographic. McNally has taken photos for 30 years, but this Instagram one might just be one of his best.
