Jason Helvingston Fights Orlando, Florida Officials over his Vegetable Garden

The city of Orlando, Florida has told Jason Helvingston to dig up his 25 x 25 foot micro-irrigated vegetable garden, because it is against city code, by Wednesday.

Apparently, Orlando's city code requires gardens to be planted in a way that gives off a finished appearance to keep property values up.

Helvingston told ClickOrlando.com: "I said, 'You'll take my house before you take my vegetable garden. There's nothing wrong here, there's nothing poisonous here.  This is a sustainable plot of land.'"

Helvingston has not dug up his garden and has gathered more than 200 signatures on a petition.  He hopes the city will reconsider the code when he meets with a code board in December.

Helvingston added: "This is another example of the government telling us what we can do with our own property... that should never happen."
