An Islamist militia group in Libya reportedly “secured” an American Embassy in Tripoli.
Dawn of Libya, a group of Islamist militiamen, took over the Embassy last week, but according to reports, nothing inside seems to have been stolen or damaged, aside from the windows that were broken during the takeover.
On Sunday, days after taking over the compound, the group began to invite journalists and onlookers to tour the inside. According to the AP, the group claims to be safeguarding the compound rather than tearing it apart.
“To my knowledge & per recent photos the US Embassy Tripoli chancery & compound is now being safeguarded and has not been ransacked,” wrote U.S. Ambassador to Libya Deborah Jones on Twitter.
The Embassy has reportedly been unoccupied since July 26 when U.S. diplomats were evacuated to a neighboring city due to the onset of fighting.
Recently, a video was posted online showing men playing in a pool at the Embassy compound.
