The results of the Iowa caucuses are in for Republicans and Democrats.

On the Republican side, Sen. Ted Cruz of Texas scored a major victory over rival Donald Trump. Cruz received 28 percent of the vote, while Trump landed 24 percent, CNN Politics reports. Sen. Marco Rubio of Florida pulled in an impressive third place finish with 23 percent of the vote.

The Democratic caucuses yielded more uncertain results. Hillary Clinton and Sen. Bernie Sanders of Vermont were locked in a neck-and-neck tie until the end, but Clinton was eventually declared the winner. Clinton was awarded 700.59 delegate equivalents, while Sanders received 696.82 delegates, the New York Times notes.

The Iowa caucus has long been the first major electoral event in the presidential race, and is followed by the New Hampshire primary on Feb. 9.
