Infant Is on Life Support; Father Suspected of Neglecting Her, Inflicting Previous Abuse

A four-month old girl is currently on life support after her 22-year-old father reportedly abused her and neglected her injuries.

South Bend, Ind. police report that they arrived at the home of Bryan Michel at around 3:00 p.m. on Thursday.

The Fire Department Medics responded to a call that the infant was not breathing.

The child’s mother, Dominqiue Stutzman, had reportedly returned home from work on the morning of July 10 and checked in on the child, Halo, presuming her to be asleep. When she woke up, she checked back in on Halo and discovered that the infant was not breathing.

The 20-year-old mother immediately called 911 to report the incident.

While Dominique had been working the night shift, Michels babysat Halo and two other children, one of whom is the couple’s. The other child is Stutzman’s from a previous relationship.

At this time, no one has been allowed to see Halo.

Michel has been arrested and booked on preliminary charges of neglect of a dependent.

Halo’s family has indicated that the infant has fractured ribs that were showing signs of healing, which could have been indicative of previous abuse.

The St. Joseph County Metro Homicide Unit confirmed that they are investigating the incident in conjunction with the Special Victims Unit.

The unit also confirmed that “the child remains in critical condition and on life support,” and that Michel had been booked into jail.

Aside from a March 2014 arrest for not paying child support, Michel’s criminal record in St. Joseph County reportedly came up clean.
