Indian Woman Is Gang-Raped By Village Court For Having Affair With Man

A 20-year-old woman in India was ordered to be gang-raped for having a relationship with a man from another village. The court that found her guilty was also the one to carry out the punishment.

Police said all 13 accused men have been arrested for rape. Among them are 10 who made up the court and the village headman.

The woman is currently in critical condition in a hospital as of Thursday.

“I had an affair with a man,” she told The Times of India, according to the Daily Mail. “We were dragged to a gathering where our community headman was present. They told me to pay 50,000 rupees [$807]. When I said I couldn’t, they brutalized me.”

The woman was alive “only because she is a tough tribal girl,” a doctor told the paper.

“They tortured my daughter and dumped her home late at night. We were threatened not to go to the police,” the woman’s mother said. “We tried to go to Bolpur hospital, but they stopped us.”

Police said they continue to investigate the crime.

Violence against women in India has been all too common. Four years ago a teenage girl was stripped and forced to walk naked through four villages, during which hundreds of people molested her and mocked her, according to The Guardian. Several people filmed the incident with their mobile phones.

In 2012, the gang rape and murder of a 23-year-old woman sparked protests from people who demanded stricter laws and better policing. It was at this time that the United Nations asked India to ensure security for women.

According to India’s National Crime Records Bureau, registered rape cases in the county have increased by almost 900 percent over the past 40 years. Violence against women is committed not only by strangers, research found, but by state officials, spouses, and family members as well.
