Indian Villagers Kill Leopard After It Mauls 11 People

It was a wild scene in India, as a leopard escaped from a wildlife sanctuary and roared into a nearby village.

The New York Daily News reported that 11 people were mauled as villagers and animal officials tried to subdue the leopard and stop it from attacking. They used whatever they could -- sticks and stones, and finally, knives. The knives worked, and the animal eventually died from stab wounds.

The injured people -- six villagers, a policeman and four forest guards -- are expected to survive their wounds.

Leopards are protected in India, but increasingly they are wandering into towns to find food. At that point, people are free to do whatever they have to in order to protect themselves.
