A Texas couple is outraged after an IHOP employee wrote “black ppl” on their receipt. That employee is now out of a job.
Rolman Sparkman and his girlfriend Arainia Brown were dining at a local IHOP on Feb. 29, Fox 7 reported. When the time came to pay their bill, they found an unusual message written on their receipt.
“My girlfriend came up to me and said, ‘You see the receipt? It says black people on there,’” Sparkman told Fox 7. “I said, 'What do you mean it says black people?’”
“What does this mean?” Brown asked. “Are you going to do something to my food or my card”?
What made the ordeal even more bizarre was that their waiter, Dwayne Williams, was also black.
“People are being racist, and it's your own people being racist toward you for no reason,” Sparkman said.
Brown said she used to work as a waitress. She said there are different ways for waiters to identify customers.
“We either put a number or the color of their shirt, not their skin color,” Brown added.
Williams took to his Facebook page to apologize for the incident. He told the news station it was a very busy morning for him that day.
IHOP issued the following statement:
This was a poor choice made by our franchisee's team member, and is not in keeping with policies and procedures. We recognize that it could be offensive and sincerely apologize. Everyone is welcome in our restaurants and our franchisee is using this as a teachable moment for the entire team so that it will not reoccur.
Still, the couple said the damage was done. They said they won’t be returning to that IHOP ever again.
“That's kind of messed up that you have to put your own people down,” Sparkman said.
Williams said he has been terminated from the IHOP.
