Salmonella Scare Prompts Hostess Co. To Recall Twinkies

Sweet treat provider Hostess Brands has issued a recall of its Holiday White Peppermint Hostess Twinkies out of concern the product may be contaminated with salmonella.

The milk powder ingredients used in the white confectionery coating of the Holiday White Peppermint Twinkies had been recalled by ingredient provider Valley Milk Products for its possible connection with salmonella, a Food and Drug Administration press release states.

Although no cases of illnesses linked to the Twinkies have emerged as of the date of the recall, and none of the coating has tested positive for salmonella, Hostess Brands is acting "out of an abundance of caution," KFVS reports.

The White Peppermint Hostess Twinkies are sold as nine separately wrapped cakes in a box labeled with a UPC code of 888109111571.

Officials are asking consumers not to eat the treats and to return them to the store where they were originally purchased for a full refund.
