Former Republican Gov. Mike Huckabee of Arkansas has accused the media of hating President Donald Trump more than they love America.
The former GOP presidential candidate made the comments in an interview on "Fox and Friends" July 3.
He chastised the media for ignoring positive things Trump does, such as the tweet he sent out to mark July 4.
"The media basically hates Donald Trump more than they love America," Huckabee concluded, according to Newsmax.
"They are going to ignore pro-America comments he makes," he said.
Huckabee also referred to an incident over the weekend, in which Trump tweeted out a doctored video of his 2007 appearance at Wrestlemania. In the original video, Trump clotheslines WWE owner Vince McMahon to the ground; the edited video, however, shows a CNN logo superimposed on McMahon's face.
Trump's appearance on WWE was part of a feud with McMahon known as the "battle of the billionaires." Trump and McMahon are actually good friends in real life. Linda McMahon, Vince McMahon's wife, is the small business administrator in the Trump administration.
Some media outlets criticized Trump for preaching violence. CNN said in a statement that it was a "sad day when the President of the United States encourages violence against reporters."
"What I found interesting is he can tweet out something that probably he is doing for his own amusement and entertainment and the press goes totally crazy," Huckabee said on the issue.
CNN also took Trump to task for spending too much time on Twitter.
"Instead of preparing for his overseas trip, his first meeting with Vladimir Putin, dealing with North Korea and working on his health care bill, he is instead involved in juvenile behavior far below the dignity of his office," the CNN statement added. "We will keep doing our jobs. He should start doing his."
Huckabee denied Trump was ignoring his presidential duties.
"Donald Trump is a man who gets very little sleep," Huckabee explained, according to Newsmax. "He is an incredibly capable guy who has the stamina of three people half his age. I have never seen anything like it. He sends out a very nice and positive patriotic Fourth of July message and it's crickets from all the media."
Huckabee asserted that he did not believe the American people hated Trump, but that they were "just disgusted and worn out from the media constantly just badgering this president."
