Houston Boy Scouts Council Votes to Ban Gays, Ignore National Policy

Regardless of the Boy Scouts of America's national vote on May 23, the Houston-area Boy Scouts voted this week to ban gays completely.

According to the Houston Chronicle, Sam Houston Area Council members (in Houston) voted to continue barring gays from being scouts or adult volunteers.

The Sam Houston Area Boy Scouts Council said in a statement that they don't ask about the sexual orientation of a scout or scoutmaster, but do not allow openly gay people into their organization.

Sam Houston Council officials said that 75 percent of a recent survey of parents, volunteers and backers were against changing the ban on gays.

"It's primary a national issue. The local council doesn't decide. It can only give input," said board member Allison Cambre told Click2Houston.com.

Board member James Douglas added: "I was a boy scout, my son is a boy scout I think the skills and value you learn from the Boy Scouts is invaluable. No matter what the outcome is."
