An honor roll high school senior lost her privilege to walk with her class on graduation day because of a dress code violation.
School dress codes are always a hot topic, and one high school has been gaining major headline space for their strict follow-through.
Hickory Ridge High School in North Carolina has once again made the news for its enforcement policy on dress code. Most recently, a senior student named Summer has had her story go viral, WCNC reported.
The 4.4 GPA honor student was clad in a loose, army-green top that revealed her collarbones and her lower back, when her school principal approached her at lunch. Although Summer told the principal she believed the shirt was "fine," she left the argument at that and borrowed a jacket from a friend, which she zipped up to completely cover the green top. But her attempt to comply was unsuccessful.
The principal reportedly told Summer to go to the school control room and change into a more appropriate outfit. However, Summer reminded him that, due to past clashes between the two and an agreement that had been made, she was going to stay put until her mother had been reached. The principal is said to have complied.
The day continued, with Summer zipped up and covered, and her principal trying to get in touch with the student's mother.
Summer and her classmates attended a school assembly later in the day but were all shocked to see the principal take the stage with the campus security guard and ask everyone, except Summer, to leave.
"[The security guard] was within five feet of me, he had his hand on his gun," Summer said.
"[The principal] said 'I’m gonna give you an ultimatum. We have tried to call your mother. You either come with me to the control room to change your shirt or we will arrest you,'" she added.
Summer was reportedly right on the cusp of being handcuffed when her mother finally called the school.
Summer was given a 10-day suspension for "insubordination."
Her fellow student claim that the principal is still out to expel her for the recent spat.
In an interview, Summer explained that this incident puts her full-ride, pre-med scholarship at risk.
Hickory Ridge High School has a history of strict enforcement for dress code. So much so that they have received major news coverage for it.
The Independent Tribune reported that in two days in September 2016, the school actually called in 46 students for dress code violations
On Sept. 7, 2016, 25 students were sent in, and on Sept. 21, 2016, 21 others were called in.
All of them were females who were wearing leggings that weren't accompanied by what the school deemed to be long enough shirts.
As such, they were all forced to finish the day in an alternate classroom to prevent distracting other students with their apparel.
