Hollywood Sign Changed To 'Hollyweed' As Prank (Photos)

The iconic Hollywood logo sign in Los Angeles was vandalized to read "Hollyweed" as part of an alleged New Year's Day prank.

The incident occurred on Jan. 1 at around 3 a.m. Lieutenant Guy Juneau of the Los Angeles Police Department's Security Services Division said a male suspect was caught on surveillance video altering the famous landmark to read "Hollyweed" instead of "Hollywood," KABC reported.

The unidentified suspect was dressed in all black. He scaled Mount Lee, climbed into the sign's "O" letters and draped them with black tarps to make them appear as lowercase "e" letters

The black tarps used to cover the "O" letters appeared to display a peace sign and a heart.

The vandal remains at large. Police said he would be facing a misdemeanor trespassing charge if arrested. The Department of General Services was also notified of the incident. The agency's officers patrol the area.

The tarps were removed at around 11:15 a.m., but not before photos of the defaced Hollywood sign were shared all throughout social media.

"I thought we came to see the Hollywood sign, not the 'Hollyweed' sign," Bruce Quinn told KABC. "But hey, it's OK with me."

Others took to Twitter to share their commentary on the prank.

"hahahaha this is iconic... I love my city," wrote one user, who is a makeup artist. "Shout out to whomever transformed the HOLLYWOOD sign to #Hollyweed."

"Whomever changed the hollywood sign to hollyweed is a damn legend," another user said.

"It hasn't even been one day and 2017 is already better than 2016 #Hollyweed," wrote another user.

This isn't the first time the Hollywood sign was changed to "Hollyweed." In 1976, the landmark was changed in a similar prank, The Cannabist reported, according to ABC. It was changed again 10 years later as part of a publicity campaign for a movie.
