A North Texas teacher who is HIV positive admitted to having sex with a 15-year-old boy, McKinney police say.
Roger “Joe” Kessler, 43, was caught leaving the home of a 15-year-old boy and allegedly admitted to having sex with the teen at least four times, according to arrest documents.
Authorities said Kessler, a music teacher at Richardson Independent School District Academy, did not tell the teen that he is HIV positive. During at least one sexual encounter Kessler did not use protection, WFAA reported.
Police were called to the boy’s home on Wednesday and found Kessler being detained by the homeowner.
The teen’s mother told police she caught Kessler leaving her backyard. Initially she thought he was burglar.
"The homeowner saw a male suspect fleeing the residence and the homeowner was able to detain the suspect until police arrived," McKinny police spokesperson Sabrina Boston told WFAA.
Investigators say Kessler met the teen through the smartphone app Grindr. He showed officers at the scene text messages he had exchanged with the teen, according to police documents.
“Kessler has been a music teacher in RISD for 14 years, all at RISD Academy, with no history of complaints of this nature,” the school district said in a statement.
Richardson ISD officials told CBS DFW that the sexual assault charges against Kessler do not involve any students from RISD Academy or any child in the district.
"We feel very confident the victim was never a student of Mr. Kessler's," Boston said.
School officials put Kessler on paid leave.
He is currently being held on felony charges at Collin County Jail. His bond was set at $250,000.
