Footage from a boat safari in Kafue National Park in Zambia captured the moment a hippo chased the passengers.
The video was uploaded by Michael Varndell, managing director of tour company Malawian Style, on his Facebook page on Jan. 12.
In the video, the hippo leaves a wave of water in its wake as it inches closer to the boat. The boat picks up speed just in time to avoid the hippo’s leap from the water, just a few feet from the passengers on board.
According to Varndell, this isn’t the first time he’s been chased by a hippo.
“On one occasion we were chased by two separate hippos, in two completely separate parts of the river,” Varndell said. “To be fair one had a baby, but the bottom line is the Kafue is still so raw and wild and undiscovered.”
Varndell added that hippos aren’t normally aggressive unless they have babies or they feel threatened.
“Nothing like getting too close for comfort,” Varndell wrote in the video’s description.
As of Jan. 14, the original Facebook video has been viewed 190,000 times and shared by more than 4,000 people.
