Presidential candidates Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump will have different sized podiums during the first presidential debate on Sept. 26.
The different sizes are meant to offset the large height difference between Trump, who is 6 feet 2 inches, and Clinton, who is 5 feet 4 inches. The Clinton campaign initially asked for a step stool to be placed underneath the podium so she wouldn't appear shorter than her opponent, the Daily Mail reports.
Instead of a step stool, the podium itself has been modified so both candidates appear the same size when standing in front of them. One podium is clearly larger than the other and has extra plywood.
The 90-minute, commercial-free event is one of the most anticipated presidential debates in history, according to The New York Times. It also is expected to be of vital importance to both campaigns, especially as the race itself is becoming more competitive and no longer clearly in Clinton's favor.
The debate will take place at Hofstra University in Hempstead, New York, and will be moderated by NBC journalist and registered Republican Lester Holt. Holt's political status has already worried the Clinton campaign, which believes Trump will receive an unfair advantage during the debate.
"All that we're asking is that if Donald Trump lies, that it's pointed out [by Holt]," said Clinton campaign manager Robby Mook.
Mook also believes Holt will throw easier "softball" questions to Trump but hold Clinton to a higher standard.
The Trump campaign has already combated those statements, saying that it isn't the moderator's responsibility to police the candidates.
Holt has added stress given that his colleague, Matt Lauer, who moderated a televised presidential forum, came under fire in early September for consistently interrupting Clinton while she was speaking and refusing to challenge many of Trump's statements, even when they were blatant lies, The New York Times reports.
The pressure is on to make sure both candidates look physically equal in the eyes of the American people are are treated fairly and without bias by the moderator.
