High Schoolers Celebrate 'Anti-Gay Day' With 'Lynch List' Say Reports (Video)

Several students at McGuffey High School in Washington County, Pennsylvania, reportedly held an “Anti-Gay Day” at school last Thursday and Friday to combat the nationwide "Day of Silence."

The "Day of Silence" was scheduled for last Friday to protest the bullying of LGBT students across the country, but some pro-gay students at McGuffey High School held it last Wednesday because of a field trip later in the week.

The anti-gay students at McGuffey High School allegedly told other students to wear flannel shirts, write the words “anti-gay” on their hands and place Bible verses on the lockers of LGBT students, reports Channel 11 News (video below).

“I got called a dyke, a faggot,” Zoe Johnson, a student, told Buzzfeed. “They were calling us every horrible name you can think of.”

Johnson added that 30 to 50 students took part in the "Day of Silence," while about 50 students were part of the "Anti-Gay Day" on Thursday and Friday.

Kathy Cameron, chair of the board of directors of the Washington County Gay Straight Alliance, told BuzzFeed that some anti-gay students uploaded Bible verses to Instagram where they noted gay students and created a “lynch list” of students who celebrated the "Day of Silence." A noose was reportedly hung in one classroom.

Johnson and other pro-gay students spoke at a school board meeting last Thursday night, and called for administrators to take action.

Dr. Erica Kolat, the superintendent of McGuffey School District, said in a statement:

On Thursday, April 16, 2015, allegations of harassment were brought to administration’s attention following the McGuffey High School Gay-Straight Alliance Club’s observance of GLSEN’s “Day of Silence.” Administration and school police officers have been investigating all allegations and continue to do so.

At this time, no witnesses have seen the rumored “lynch list” that was mentioned in previous news reports. Additionally, no statements have included physical harassment.

Our investigation is ongoing, and we encourage anyone with information to contact McGuffey School District administration immediately.

McGuffey School District is committed to providing a safe, supportive environment for all children.
