A California teacher and wrestling coach may just find himself wearing the prison blues after he was charged with committing lewd acts upon 25 male students.
Thomas Joseph Snider, 47, turned himself in to the Torrance Police Department and was arrested for the aforementioned crimes.
His arrest came at the heels of a three-month long investigation that began when multiple students accused Snider of sexual misconduct, according to KTLA.
For many of the students at Torrance High School, news of the arrest blindsided them.
"I think they're shocked ..." Brian Araiza, captain of the school's wrestling team, told KTLA, "everyone really doesn't know what's gonna happen next."
Snider had been placed on administrative leave as officials investigated the issue.
Though there were rumors around the school that Snider had been acting inappropriately towards the students, Araiza was incredulous.
"They said it was happening," he said. "But I never really paid attention."
Since his arrest, Snider has been charged with 33 felony counts of lewd acts upon a child as well as 8 misdemeanor counts of child annoyance, according to KTLA.
Snider is scheduled to appear in court on Thursday. He was reportedly being held on $900,000 bail.
The school district has since released a statement regarding the issue.
“Mr. Snider has been a TUSD teacher since 1990, teaching career technical education courses,” said the statement. “He was hired as the THS wrestling coach two years ago. As this is a personnel and legal matter, the District will have no further comment pending the outcome of the court proceedings.”
According to RAINN.org, 44% of all victims of sexual assault are under the age of 18 with two-thirds of the crimes being committed by someone the victim knows.
