An Indiana man was arrested after stabbing a sleeping 6-year-old boy to death.
Authorities were called into the Versailles, Kentucky, home on Dec. 7. Police say Ronald Exantus, 32, broke into the home at around 4 a.m., grabbed a knife from the kitchen, went upstairs and stabbed Logan Tipton several times in the head and neck, WPSD reported.
Logan’s aunt told WKYT that four other children were sleeping in the bedroom at the time of the incident. The victim’s 11-year-old sister reportedly woke up, saw what was happening, threw herself at Exantus and started screaming for their father.
The father detained Exantus until police arrived, The Associated Press reported, according to WPSD. He was injured while fighting Exantus.
Neighbors said they were shocked and heartbroken by the news.
“I just can't imagine how those parents feel,” Tiffany Bourne told WPSD. “They're the same age as me. I went to school with both of those parents.”
Police say it is unknown why Exantus targeted Logan’s home, which is more than 100 miles from where Exantus lives. He was charged with burglary and murder and will appear in court on Dec. 14. His bail was set at $1 million.
A public defender representing Exantus said she believes Exantus is “mentally ill,” WKYT reported.
