Here's a New One -- Guns-for-Gas

We all know about guns-for-cash programs, even guns-for-toys during the holiday season. But with the price of a gallon of gasoline skyrocketing, in Louisiana they have come up with a novel guns-for-gas idea.

According to a report in The Daily Reveille, for the second straight year the East Baton Rouge local government set up such an exchange program. People turned in their guns this weekend and got gas cards ranging from $50 to $300, depending on the type of weapon surrendered.

Officials admit the program does not take guns out of the hands of the bad guys.

"We're not really making a pitch to criminals to turn in their weapons," said government spokesman Scott Dyer. "But if you can get (guns) off the streets, everybody is going to be better off in the long."

In all, 165 guns were exchanged, and it did not cost taxpayers a dime. The money came from a $10,000 donation from Circle K as well as cash recovered during drug busts. There was plenty of money left over, so they will be doing this again soon.
