A grandmother from New York was arrested for leaving her 5-year-old granddaughter in an unheated car for an hour in below-freezing temperatures while she allegedly gambled at a casino.
Renee Osby, 56, reportedly attempted to bring her young granddaughter into the Resorts World Casino in Queens, New York, but was turned away after employees told her children are not permitted inside. Osby left the casino, returning a short time later by herself. Security guards who had seen Osby with the young girl became suspicious and tracked down the woman’s car in the parking lot. They discovered 5-year-old Jordyn sitting in the unheated vehicle by herself in below-freezing temperatures.
Osby returned to the car an hour later and claimed she had just gone inside to cash a check, though authorities said she had actually been inside the casino playing slot machines.
“Earlier today, Resorts World security observed a five-year-old child in an unattended vehicle in the parking lot,” the casino said in a statement. “They were able to safely remove the child from the vehicle and immediately called 911. The safety and security of everyone on Resorts World property is our number one priority.”
Osby was arrested for “acting in a manner injurious to a child,” and her granddaughter was later reunited with her mother.
