A tragic story out of California, where a selfless act by a Good Samaritan led to the murder of a three-year-old girl.
Police in San Bernardino say sometime on Monday a man saw another man beating a woman on a street and stepped in to separate them and save the woman, reports the Los Angeles Times.
"Somebody from that residence intervened and did a good thing," police spokeswoman Lt. Gwendolyn Waters said.
Later in the day the man sought revenge on the Good Samaritan, opening fire on the front porch of his house, which was crowded with adults as well as children. A three-year-old girl was hit and killed.
"We lost one of our babies," Sophia Cardona said of her great-granddaughter Nylah Franco-Torrez. "She was a sweet little girl."
Another three-year-old was shot in the head and is in critical condition. A pregnant woman was hit in the neck and jaw and is also in critical condition. Her unborn baby was not harmed.
Police are still looking for the man responsible for this "tragic, senseless, despicable homicide," in the words of San Bernardino Police Chief Keith Kilmer.
Mayor Patrick Morris called on residents of his city to help find this man.
"Today we'll come together as a city and find justice for this family," Morris said.
