The 12-year-old girl who was stabbed 19 times by two peers inspired by the fictional “Slender Man” character received an anonymous Purple Heart in the mail along with an inspiring message.
The wounded Wisconsin preteen, who bravely escaped death on May 31 after Anissa Weier and Morgan Geyser, both 12, reportedly stabbed her repeatedly in an effort to please the mythical figure, has accepted thousands of packages from people all over the world, reports ABC News. Her most recent gift was a Purple Heart, which is usually given to wounded veterans and family of military men and women who were killed while serving the country.
The girl, whose identity has not been revealed because of her age, received the medal along with a note that read, “The Only Heart I Could Find – Stay Strong.”
The victim and her family say they would like to thank the person who sent them this gift, but that they don’t know his or her identity.
“[Her parents] explained to her the significance of a Purple Heart in the military and what it means, what a personal sacrifice it is to be wounded on behalf of the country, and how incredible it is to be sent this,” Stephen Lyons, the family’s spokesperson, said. “The gift really resonates with the family because they are still dealing with wounds, emotionally and physically, from the events of May 31.”
Lyons says the family is trying to decide on the perfect place in their home to display the Purple Heart and that they are incredibly thankful for all of the positive attention and encouragement they’ve received.
“Our family continues to be so moved by the prayers, well wishes, packages, financial support, and purple hearts from around the world,” the family wrote in a statement. “It does not surprise me that a decorated veteran unselfishly gave this amazingly brave and courageous little girl something from his or her heart.”
