Nyjah Espinosa would have celebrated her second birthday on Christmas Day, but tragedy struck while she was visiting her father’s home in the Miami-Dade area of Florida. Nyjah was attacked and killed by her father’s dog on Dec. 20.
According to Espinosa’s grandmother, Diley Gonzalez, Nyjah was taken to Miami Children's Hospital after the attack, but doctors were unsuccessful in their efforts to keep her alive.
Gonzalez has set up an online fundraiser to cover the cost of her granddaughter’s funeral expenses. By Dec/ 23, the GoFundMe campaign had raised almost double its $5,000 goal.
"I think it's sad and you know, have to be careful where your kids are," neighbor Jerra Groce told WTVJ.
Although the details of the attack are still unknown, the dog is in the care of Animal Services pending an investigation. While investigators described the dog as a 5-year-old, 95-pound American bulldog mix, Gonzalez wrote in her description of the attack that the dog was a pit bull.
