A U.K. McDonald's kicked a teenage girl out of the restaurant for using a women’s restroom, as employees thought she was a boy. Employees reportedly mistook the girl’s sex due to her short hair in the April 5 incident.
Ny Richardson said that an employee approached her for official ID to prove her sex, reports Yahoo News. When she could not prove that she was a woman, she was thrown off the premises.
"I said to him, 'Why do I need to leave? I’m a girl, can you not tell by my voice?'" said Ny.
"He then asked me to show some ID, but when I didn’t have any he told me to get out and he rang the police."
The 16-year-old said that the McDonald's employees made her feel “humiliated in front of the whole restaurant.”
McDonald’s argued that Ny and a group were asked to leave due to inappropriate behavior.
“This group has been asked to leave the restaurant on numerous occasions over the past few days, culminating in the police being called on Tuesday evening. These actions have been taken due to unacceptable [behavior] only,” McDonald’s said in a statement.
The development comes as controversy mounts in the U.S. following legislation that restricts bathroom use based on biological sex.
North Carolina adopted a bill in March that bars transgender people from using the bathroom of their choice.
Republican Gov. Pat McCrory of North Carolina says restrictions on transgender bathroom use are needed “to stop this breach of basic privacy and etiquette,” reports The Washington Post.
Those opposed to restrictions on the bathroom use of transgender people say such laws are discriminatory and irresponsible.
"[It’s] no different than the Jim Crow laws we had here in the South," said transgender activist Candis Cox, according to CNN. "This law is literally the same thing. And if we didn’t find that acceptable, this is not acceptable," she added.
Businesses have reeled at laws restricting transgender bathroom choice. PayPal, for example, announced it would not expand into Charlotte, North Carolina after the state enacted its bathroom bill.
