Girl Dies After Trapped in Box, Father Sentenced to 14 Years for Abuse

The father of a 10-year-old girl who was found trapped in a padlocked footlocker, dead in the desert heat two years ago, has been sentenced to 14 years in prison.

David Deal and other relatives of the girl were arrested for abusing the girl in many disturbing ways, most disturbing of which was making her run in the Phoenix, Ariz. heat and then trapping her in the small box.

It was after she was trapped in the small box that she died from suffocation.

Judge Susanna Pineda sentenced Deal after he pleaded guilty to attempted child abuse. He has not been charged with her death.

Ame Deal died on July 2011 after being padlocked in the footlocker as punishment for stealing a popsicle.

Six people in her family were arrested in connection with her death.

Cynthia Stoltzmann, 45, was the girl's aunt. She is scheduled for sentencing on Thursday.

The girl's grandmother, Judith Deal, will be sentenced on July 26.

Police believe David Deal was the first family member to have used confinement as punishment for the girl.

He said she was a "Pillsbury Doughboy-looking thing" and said she had mental problems. He denies being her father.

Judith Deal, the girl's grandmother, pleaded guilty to two counts of attempted child abuse after she put hot sauce on the girl's mouth and hit her with a paddle.

Cynthia Stoltzmann, who was a legal guardian of the girl, pleaded guilty to two counts of child abuse and one count of attempted child abuse.

Stoltzmann allegedly threw Ame into a swimming pool a few months before her death and also forced her head underwater.

She also once sat on the footlocker while Ame was inside of it for stealing food.

Two others charged with murdering Ame will face the death penalty, according to Maricopa County Attorney's Office.

Ame's cousins, John 'Bud' Allen and Samantha Allen locked the girl up in the storage box, but have pleaded not guilty to charges of first-degree murder, conspiracy to commit child abuse and multiple counts of child abuse.
