Doctors Find Massive Hairball Blocking Digestive System Of Teen Girl (Graphic Photo)

A Kyrgyzstan teen who went to a hospital complaining she couldn’t eat or drink for a few days discovered a huge hairball blocking her digestive system.

Ayperi Alekseeva has a bad habit of picking up hair from the carpet and eating it and chewing the tips of her hair, the Daily Mail reports.

She had been brought to a hospital in the town of Batken by her parents after complaining of severe stomach pains.

Upon examination, doctors found a hairball weighing nearly 9 pounds.

Doctors say that the teenager, who was dehydrated and malnourished, could be dead if it wasn’t for emergency surgery at Bishkek Hospital in the country’s capital.

“The parents brought her in after she started losing weight, and she couldn't eat anything,” Bahadir Bebezov, senior professor of surgery at the hospital, said. “By the time we got her, she couldn't even drink water. We realised we needed to operate immediately. Her stomach was so badly swollen from hair and bits of wool from the carpet that it literally just oozed out soon as the wall of the stomach was cut.”

Psychologically, according to Bebezov, Alekseeva is perfectly normal and healthy.

Doctors said that despite searching through 50 year of medical records, there was no evidence of such a large hairball. However, the young girl isn’t the first patient to have a hairball removed from her stomach.

In 2007, surgeons pulled out a giant 10-pound hairball from the stomach of an 18-year-old Chicago girl suffering from trichophagia, a psychological condition in which she ate her own hair, reports, citing the New England Journal of Medicine. Once the hairball was removed, the patient was released and given psychiatric help.

As for Alekseeva, she is now recovering from surgery and will return home soon.
