27-year-old German man Matthias Schlitte was born with a huge superhuman arm, and instead of being ashamed of it, he has used it to his advantage by becoming an international arm wrestling champion.
When Schlitte was 16 years old, he stumbled into a bar and randomly joined in an arm wrestling match. He quickly realized that his supersized right arm, which measures 46 centimeters around the forearm, was much more of an asset to him than he thought. In the last decade, he has won arm wrestling championship tournaments all over the world.
“Many people’s first association with arm wrestling is a beer-soaked bar-table and drunken sailors – which is completely wrong,” said Schlitte. “In 2004, a little bar in Haldensleben was looking for the strongest arm wrestler in the region – my first tournament and the beginning of my career. Without any knowledge or practice [sic] I competed in the amateur-class up to 90kg – being only 16 years old with a weight of 65kg. At first, older and more experienced fighters smiled at me for being so light-weighted, but after winning the contest the opinions changed immediately.”
Now, Schlitte has eight national and 14 international championship titles under his belt, and with an arm like his, he is destined to continue to succeed in arm wrestling for a long time.
