Georgia Mother Sentenced to 190 Years in Prison for Child Abuse In Case Described As One Of State's Worst

A Georgia woman was sentenced Dec. 8 to 190 years in prison for child abuse in a manner described as one "this state has not seen," said Prosecutor Wayne Jernigan.

The mother, Diana Franklin, was convicted of beating and starving her adopted daughter, including locking her in a chicken coop naked, WMAZ reports.

The 28 felony counts on which she was convicted on Nov. 23 include cruelty to children, false imprisonment and aggravated assault.

"I will never treat my children the way you treated me. I forgive you for everything you've done. You have to pay for what you did to me," the daughter, now 18, said in court before her mother was sentenced, reports WMAZ.

Georgia Bureau of Investigation's Leigh Brooks says the memories still haunt the daughter, stating that "she continues to have nightmares as a result of the abuse she suffered from Diana Franklin."

"Till this day, when I think about being locked in the chicken coop, I can still smell the disgusting smell of chicken poop all around me," the daughter said, reports WLTZ.

"This is the worst case I've ever seen where the child survived," Brooks added.

Franklin's statements apparently revealed no remorse, driving prosecutors to ask Judge Bobby Peters for the long sentence.

Franklin said she never imagined being at court "in a pair of handcuffs for doing nothing more than loving someone who needed love."

She also compared being forced to obey the jail's rules to the rules she placed upon her daughter, stating that the abuse was just punishment she received for allegedly not obeying them, reports Tucson News Now.

"Your idea of disciplining a child is unheard of," said the judge after listening to Franklin's statements in court. "To me you're just an evil woman hiding behind a Bible."

Franklin's husband, Samuel, has also been accused of abuse and will be facing child molestation charges as well. His trial will be held at a later date.
