Georgia Mother Nakia Grimes Asked To Prove She’s A Woman

A Georgia woman's birth certificate has listed her as a man for the last 37 years, but she didn't know about the mistake until recently.

When Nakia Grimes went to renew her driver’s license, she noticed the "x" in the field on her birth certificate that marks her as a male.

"When I went to retrieve my birth certificate, I let her know the sex status is wrong," Grimes said.  "I'm a woman, was born a woman. You only look at the name, the date and the year. I've never seen that."

She was told by state workers that she would have to prove that she was a woman. They asked her to get proof from her primary care doctor. Grimes is a mother and never thought the fact that she is a woman would ever be questioned.

"She said I needed to go have a PAP exam, have a doctor write a note verifying you're a woman, and bring it back -– notarized," Grimes said.

FOX reporter Kaitlyn Pratt took Grimes' concerns to the state’s Vital Records Services department. The director of the department said that she would look into the incident and make things right. According to Fox Atlanta, state records officials said that after looking up the birth certificate of Grimes' son, Zion, they made the change and checked the correct box on Grimes’ birth certificate.
