Few things in this world are as formidable as a mother doing whatever it takes to protect her child. That fighting instinct helped a mother in Norcross, Georgia, when a man reportedly tried to abduct her 10-month-old baby in a McDonald’s parking lot.
The attempted kidnapper has been identified as 19-year-old Sterlyn Reynolds, who allegedly stalked the mother, her baby and the infant’s grandfather as they ate at a McDonald’s restaurant.
Reynolds’ attempt to nab the baby was calculated, Daily Mail reports.
According to the Gwinnett County Police report: “The mother first noticed the suspect standing beside her vehicle prior to going inside the restaurant. The victim, along with her 10-month-old baby girl and another family member, went inside. The suspect sat at a table close to the family.”
When the family had finished their meals, they reportedly left the restaurant and were followed into the parking lot by Reynolds. The mother secured her baby in the backseat and began approaching the driver’s door.
“That’s when the suspect opened up one of the car doors and started to unbuckle a 10-month-old baby girl and started to take her out of the car seat,” Cpl. Michele Pihera told WSB.
According to the police report: “The mother began hitting the suspect from inside the vehicle while holding the baby down. The mother bit the suspect on his arm, grabbed her baby, and ran back inside the restaurant.”
The baby suffered minor bruises to her arms and neck, NY Daily News reports.
Reynolds fled to a hotel, where he was later arrested, according to Gwinnett County Police.
“He essentially told us he had no recollection of the incident, so he could not provide any further information as to why he specifically targeted this family and more specifically this young child,” Pihera said.
Reynolds is currently being held without bail on charges of kidnapping and cruelty to children.
The mother told WSB reporters she hopes to encourage other mothers to be ready to protect their children.
The police and media have not released the name of the mother or her child. She is reportedly terrified Reynolds will come after her child again.
