Georgia Man Thwarts Carjacking Attempt, Holds Suspect At Gunpoint (Video)

A Georgia man said he held a would-be carjacker at gunpoint until police arrived.

In an interview with WSB News, Hashim Fannin said he had just pulled in to a parking spot at a Family Dollar store on Atlanta’s north side earlier this month when a his doors automatically unlocked and a man slid into the passenger seat. So, Fannin said, he pulled a gun and told the man no one would be driving away in the car until police showed up.

A witness captured the final moments of the incident on cellphone video (shown below).

“You know what this is,” Fannin said the man told him.

And Fannin did. He likely thought it was a carjacking technique people in Atlanta have been referring to as “sliding.”

It occurs when a carjacker slides into a still-running vehicle, locks out the owner and speeds off.

Numbers of such cases have apparently been on the rise in the city. WSB reported a similar incident occurred in April when a so-called slider made off with a woman’s vehicle as she finished pumping gas at a local gas station.

But Fannin said he was determined to make sure the man didn't make off with his car.

He said he pulled out his gun immediately after the man hopped in the car.

“I asked him to get out the car, probably not in those exact words,” Fannin told WSB.

“I told him, ‘No, there’s no leaving, leaving was before you hopped into my car ... at this point there is no leaving,’” he recounted.

Video of the incident shows Fannin holding the gun on the man with the man lying face down in the parking lot.

“You were not trying to rob me?” Fannin can be heard saying to the man. “Do you just get into random people's cars?

“You just stay on the ground and wait for the police,” Fannin says at one point.

When police arrive, Fannin sets his gun on a nearby curb and waves officers over.

The suspect was later identified as Edgar Horn. A police report indicates he was charged with attempted robbery and entering an automobile.

One officer can be seen in the video shaking Fannin’s hand as another prepares to handcuff Horn.

Fannin told WSB he was glad officers were able to arrest to the man.

“Honestly, I look at it like this: That is one less guy I got to worry about bothering my mom when she’s out grocery shopping,” he said.
