Georgia Father Charged In 10-Week-Old Son's Breathing Death

Kelvin Odom, a 50-year-old, Atlanta, Georgia, man, has been arrested by police after he was accused of beating his 10-week-old son, Justin, to death.

Emergency services were called to the Gwinnett County home at 4:30 a.m. on Sept. 2 after Justin stopped breathing. But when they arrived, he appeared to have resumed breathing normally and was crying, WSB reported.

At the time of the visit by first responders, Odom was the sole adult at the home.

“… Odom was afforded the opportunity to have the child transported to the hospital,” police spokesman Deon Washington said, according to the Atlanta Journal Constitution. “He declined to have the child transported by ambulance.”

It was only three hours later when the mother arrived home from work that the couple took Justin to hospital. The mother described the 10-week-old boy as being discolored and having difficulty breathing.

Odom allegedly told the boy’s mother that he had fallen off the couch and landed on the floor, Daily Mail reported.

After driving a short distance, they called 911 and an ambulance took the baby to hospital.

After examining the baby, doctors identified that Justin had suffered a fractured skull and closed head trauma.

Justin died at the hospital on Sunday.

Washington suggested the injuries could have occurred before the first 911 call.

“It’s possible that whatever injuries were inflicted on the child had already taken place and they just had not begun [sic] to manifest visually,” he said to WSB.

Four other children aged 14 or under were living at the apartment.

Odom was arrested on Thursday and has been charged with first degree cruelty to children. He could face additional charges depending on the results of the autopsy.
