George Zimmerman, the neighborhood watch volunteer who was acquitted after fatally shooting Trayvon Martin in July, was arrested Monday for pointing a shotgun at his girlfriend. He is being held without bail pending a court appearance today.
USA Today reported that following a domestic altercation Zimmerman pointed a shotgun at Samantha Scheibe, with whom he had been living since August. He was packing his things to move out of the house she rented.
Seminole County Sheriff’s Office Chief Deputy Dennis Lemma said that Zimmerman then barricaded himself in the house. Scheibe gave deputies the key and they pushed aside the furniture he had piled against the door to enter.
Zimmerman was unarmed and did not resist arrest.
Lemma said investigators believe Zimmerman kept a shotgun and an assault rifle in his home. He had locked up the shotgun before the police arrived; they are now seeking a search warrant.
CBS News obtained the 911 recording of Scheibe’s panicked call.
"You put your gun in my freaking face," Scheibe is heard telling Zimmerman. "Get out of my house. Do not push me out of my house. Please get out of my house."
She then tells the dispatcher: "He pushed me out of my house and locked me out. ... He knows how to do this. He knows how to play this game."
In the arrest report, Scheibe said that Zimmerman became upset after she told him to pack up, and cocked the shotgun. When she said she was going to call the police, he pointed the gun at her and "asked her if she really wanted to do that." He then smashed a glass-top coffee table with the butt of the weapon and demanded she leave.
Scheibe was not injured, only shaken by the incident.
According to the Sun-Sentinel, at the time Zimmerman was barricaded in the house he called 911 and told authorities his girlfriend had "gone crazy on me.”
He said that Scheibe was pregnant with their child and decided she wanted to raise the child without him. As he tried to leave, "she just started smashing stuff, taking stuff that belonged to me.”
Scheibe said she is not pregnant.
Zimmerman was booked on aggravated assault with a weapon, a felony, as well as misdemeanor battery-domestic violence and criminal mischief charges.
