George Huguely Found Guilty of Murdering Yeardley Love

A jury in Virginia on Wednesday found George Huguley guilty of murdering his ex-girlfriend Yeardley Love.

Both were students at the University of Virginia and played on their respective lacrosse teams in May 2010 when Huguley beat Love to death in her apartment. Huguley was acquitted on lesser charges but faces five to 40 years in prison on the second-degree murder conviction.

The jury deliberated for nine hours following several days of testimony.

Huguley, who did not testify at the trial, admitted to police that he may have shaken Love as they talked about their relationship, but that he never beat her. He claimed Love repeatedly slammed her own head against the wall.

A defense expert theorized that Love might have smothered herself in her pillow, perhaps due to a combination of alcohol and a prescription drug she was taking.

The jury obviously did not believe the defense's tales, and now Huguley could face spending the better part of the rest of his life behind bars.
