A Florida father threw his 2-year-old son off the second-floor balcony of his motel Tuesday because he said he was “frustrated.”
Juan Pablo Maradiaga, 41, threw his son off the balcony of the Budget Inn in Kissimmee early Tuesday. Later he jumped off the balcony himself.
Both he and his son both survived the fall with broken bones.
Maradiaga, who police said smelled of alcohol at the time of his arrest, is facing charges of attempted murder. He said he threw the boy because he was "frustrated."
“I got a baby and a young man that’s laying on the ground,” a 911 caller told a dispatcher just after 12:30 a.m. Tuesday. “They’re out … they’re unconscious. I just pulled up in the parking lot and I seen them lying on the ground unconscious.”
The incident was captured on video surveillance, according to the arrest affidavit. It showed an angry Maradiaga throw the little boy 25 feet across the parking lot from the balcony, which stands 12 feet from the ground.
Second later Maradiaga leans over the railing and jumps.
The boy sustained a fractured right arm, a fractured right orbital bone in his face, abrasions to his stomach and a bump on his head. He was covered in blood when paramedics arrived.
His father had a broken leg, with the bone protruding from his skin, according to the New York Daily News.
The boy’s mother said she received an angry phone call from Maradiaga 30 minutes before the incident. He said he needed her to come home from work and watch the child, but she couldn’t.
