Maricopa County, Ariz. Sheriff Joe Arpaio recently made headlines again for punishing some of his inmates for flag desecration.
According to NBC News, Sheriff Arpaio claims that 38 inmates did not agree with his new policy of placing American flags in jail cells and allegedly desecrated the flags.
As punishment, Sheriff Arpaio announced he was only going to let the inmates eat water and bread, which he described as, "a baked loaf of ground-up fruits, vegetables, milk powder, dough and other ingredients.”
Fox News' "The Five" co-host Eric Bolling recently boasted that he would only allow the inmates to have water for one week, in defense of America's freedom, notes Mediaite.com (video below).
”I wear the flag for a reason,” stated Bolling. “It represents American freedom. Our sons and daughters are dying on battlefields around the world for the freedom that this flag represents. If people who are incarcerated are burning the flag, stepping on the flag, tearing the flag, it’s a complete disrespect. You don’t even deserve, deserve the bread.”
However, Bolling did not note exactly which foreign battlefields Americans were dying on to protect American freedom. The US has invaded and attacked numerous countries in the name of "freedom" in recent years, which may be what Bolling was referring to.
“Give them water,” added Bolling. “You can probably last a week without anything.”
“How do you think people feel if their sons or daughters or wives or husbands are killed by people who are then imprisoned, these people who have food, flat screen TVs, play areas, soccer fields. What kind of punishment is that? No incentive not to do it,” said Bolling.
Contrary to Bolling's fantasy about Arizona criminals, the National Institute of Corrections states that 90 percent of Arizona’s crimes are property crimes while only 10% are violent crimes.
Bolling failed to mention how Arizona has deals with private prison companies to keep some of their jails at 100 percent occupancy, reports Mother Jones.
