Former Teacher Debra Lafave Back on Probation for Sex with Student

Former Tampa, Fla., schoolteacher Debra Lafave has been ordered back on probation after an appellate court reversed a judge’s ruling to release her from her legal obligations.

Lafave was originally on probation after pleading guilty in 2005 to having sex with a 14-year-old at the middle school where she was a teacher.

Prior to being put back on probation, LaFave was using her time off to help her family.

“My mom was diagnosed with cancer for the second time and I spent my of probation, excuse me, off probation, taking care of her and I'm so fortunate that I was able to take her to chemo treatments and spend the nights with her when she needed me the most and I appreciate the news people who have spoke on the truth," said LaFave.

Lafave’s re-instated probation conditions require her to observe a curfew from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. and to stay away from schools. Her probationary period, if upheld, will extend more than four years until early 2017. However it is uncertain if the probation period for the mother of twins will last as long as has been sentenced at this time. Her lawyer, John Fitzgibbons, has filed an appeal and it has been accepted.

“The Supreme Court of Florida has accepted jurisdiction of the case. We're hopeful we will receive a favorable ruling in the next six months to a year from the Supreme Court and that should finally conclude things one way or another in this case," Fitzgibbons said.

In the meantime, Lafave will go back to serving out her punishment for a crime that occurred more than eight years ago.
