Former Bengals cheerleader and high school teacher Sarah Jones pleaded guilty today to having sex with a 17-year-old student at a Kentucky school where she taught. After pleading guilty in court, Jones left hand-in-hand with the student she had a sexual relationship with.
According to the Daily Mail, the 27-year-old woman taught English at Dixie Heights High School but resigned last November. Jones also admitted to sexual misconduct and custodial interference.
In court, Jones said, "I began a romantic relationship while he was a student and I was in a position of authority."
As part of her plea deal, she has agreed to never teach or coach again. After serving a five year probation, Jones will be able to clear the felony custodial interference charge from her record.
Jones' mother, former school principal Cheryl Armstrong Jones, was also involved in the crimes. She pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor charge of tampering with evidence.
Cheryl said she sent the boy a text message telling him to "get rid of his phone" after her daughter was placed under house arrest for sleeping with the student.
Rumors about the student-teacher relationship started after the victim's ex-girlfriend found out about the situation. There were also 9,000 pages of photos, Facebook messages, and text messages between the teenaged victim and Jones.
Filed in March, the indictment says that the sexual relationship started between October 1 and December 31. At first, Jones had pleaded not guilty to the accusations.
Jones also pleaded not guilty to unlawful use of electronic means to induce a minor to engage in sexual activities. This charge is usually used for those involved in online child pornography.
Earlier this year, Jones said in an interview that she has only had sex with one man, ex-husband Nathan Wilburn. After being married for one month in July of last year, they divorced.
Jones has also captured the public's attention through her presence on the gossip website TheDirty.com. The site had labeled her a "slut" with "two STDs" in 2009.
She soon emailed the site to take the photographs and statements down, but more posts appeared, this time claiming she had had sex with Bengals players.
Jones appeared on ABC to talk about the rumors. "To stand in front of 30 15-year-olds and tell them you don't have two STDs and that you are not a slut is the hardest thing you will ever have to do," Jones said.
She sued the owner of the site, Nik Richie, for character defamation, and was awarded an $11 million default judgement. The litigation is ongoing.
